A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

To recap the week that we have had in Jamaica Plain:

Growler Gala and Auction – October 25, 2018

This was our annual fundraiser held at Loring Greenough House. We featured a live and silent auction for donated items, along with beer from Turtle Swamp Brewery, cocktails with Bully Boy Distillers, and food from local area restaurants. Things got very exciting during our live auction when Councilor Matt O’Malley’s growler came up for bid.

Thank you to our Artists: Marnie Jain, Amy Joyce, Daniela Klaz, Ginger Brown, Matt O’Malley, Annissa Essaibi-George, Nika Elugardo, and Liz Malia.

Many thanks to our sponsors: The Blue Frog Bakery, East Boston Savings Bank, City Feed & Supply, Kitchenwitch, Dunkin’, JP Knit & Stitch, The Real Deal, Purple Cactus, Ideal Cafe, JP Seafood, Canary Square, ComedySportz Boston, the JP Historical Society, Nathanael Lash, Craig Panzer, On Centre, Papercuts JP, Fire Opal, Turtle Swamp Brewery, Company One Productions, Blanchard’s, Ace Hardware, and the Boston Red Sox!

Community Vigil

While we have much to celebrate in Jamaica Plain, our hearts go out to those affected by the shootings in Pittsburgh and in Kentucky. The victims of these hate crimes were:

  • Maurice Stallard, 69 (Kentucky)
  • Vicki Lee Jones, 67 (Kentucky)
  • Joyce Fienburg, 75
  • Richard Gottfried, 65
  • Rose Mallinger, 97
  • Jerry Rabinowitz, 66
  • Cecil Rosenthal, 59
  • David Rosenthal, 54
  • Bernice Simon, 84
  • Sylvan Simon, 86
  • Daniel Stein, 71
  • Melvin Wax, 88
  • Irving Younger, 69

The loss of these lives is a terrible loss to their community and neighborhoods. A small Jamaica Plain vigil is being organized by local residents, via Facebook. They are expecting to hold a vigil on Thursday, November 1, in the park next to the Stony Brook T station, at 7:30 pm. Click here for more and updated information.

Now more than ever, we need community. We leave you with these words by Fred Rogers, in whose very neighborhood one of these tragedies happened.

It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor.
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?…It’s a neighborly day in this beauty wood,
A neighborly day for a beauty.
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?…I’ve always wanted to have a neighbor just like you.
I’ve always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.So, let’s make the most of this beautiful day.
Since we’re together we might as well say:
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
Won’t you be my neighbor?
Won’t you please,
Won’t you please?
Please won’t you be my neighbor?
