Learn how Christmas trees became popular, halls were decked, and Santa Claus came to town. Refreshments will be served following the presentation.

Join us for a Live Jazz Performance of A Charlie Brown Christmas. Our local ensemble comes together annually to perform everyone's favorite and is debuting this year at Canary Square.

Presale tickets are $15 and are available after Thanksgiving. Please contact info@canarysquare.com.

    Get to know your musicians

Bass - Ken Michaels founded this Charlie Brown Christmas tradition at The Space in Jamaica Plain 4 years ago after seeing it done in at The Family Wash in East Nashville in 2012. (Which was amazing!) Ken’s been part of the Boston music community for over 30 years as a songwriter, recording engineer, and bassist playing everything from punk to bossa nova, reggae to show tunes. He's hosted over 100 acts at his now-defunct space from 2011-2018 and is thrilled that Canary Square is hosting the Charlie Brown tradition this year. By day, Ken's an established commercial visual effects artist and animator.

Piano - Cholong Park is a teacher and pianist specializing in new music. She serves as the artistic director of "Voices of North Korean Refugees," dedicated to raising funds for North Korean refugees. She is a founding member of two chamber groups, the Pierrot ensemble and non-profit arts organization What Is Noise, as well as the Boston-based ensemble Some Assembly Required. In May 2014, Park made her Carnegie Hall debut performing solo and ensemble works. Park released her first album entitled “Stuff” in Fall 2017 and her ensemble What Is Noise’s debut album “Equivocal Duration” is scheduled for release in March 2018.

Saxophone- Rick Stone has performed and/or recorded with musicians and groups such as the Either/Orchestra, John Tchicai, the Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra, the Ayn Inserto Jazz Orchestra, the Quartet of Happinness, Bob Brookmeyer, George Garzone, and several others. Rick has taught Jazz Ear Training/saxophone/ensembles at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. He currently teaches 4th-8th grade instrumental music in the Brookline Public Schools.

    Drums- Frank Aveni
Since his early days drumming in hardcore bands, Frank Aveni has toured and recorded with musical artists including Geoglyphs, Animal Hospital Ensemble, Diamond J & The Rough, California Stadium, and Blood Cells. He has played in venues ranging from basement shows, to CBGB, the Knitting Factory, First Night, and the Museum of Fine Arts. He lives, works, and occasionally teaches drums in the Greater Boston area.

    November 2, 2018 - December 31, 2018 @
Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library, 30 South St, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130, USA

Myles Dunigan: Is the Dark Going to Catch Us at the Jamaica Plain Branch Library

The Friends of the Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library in partnership with Uforge are pleased to announce a new exhibition as part of their rotating art program. The final exhibition of the year showcases the recent prints of Massachusetts native Myles Dunigan.

A graduate of both RISD and the University of Kansas, Myles Dunigan combines different printmaking styles with photography and other media to produce layered, textured landscapes that straddle the line between abstraction and realism, equally reminiscent of the black and white photographs of Ansel Adams and the mixed media experiments of Anselm Kiefer.

Myles Dunigan: Is the Dark Going to Catch Us is on view from November 2 through December 31, 2018, with a public open house to be held by the Friends of the Jamaica Plain Library on Thursday, November 8, 5:30-7:30 PM. This exhibition is proudly sponsored by The Friends of the Jamaica Plain Branch Library.

  • Myles Dunigan Exhibit @ JP Branch Library

  • History of the Warren House

    January 5, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library

Jamaica Plain was once the summer home of the eminent Warren family (the remnants of their time in JP are still found in the name of Warren Square off Green Street) However, their main home was located at 130 Warren Avenue, Roxbury. This talk, by Maddie Webster, is the culmination of a 2018 research fellowship at the Nichols House Museum. It will focus on the historical significance of the 1846 Warren House in its own right and detail some of the accomplishments of generations of Warrens. The lecture will also highlight the Warren House’s connection to the Nichols family. For sixteen years, Arthur and Elizabeth Nichols called the Warren House home, raising their children and building Arthur's medical practice there before relocating to Beacon Hill in 1885. This talk will bring attention to the family’s stewardship of the Warren House and also discuss the deliberate and unintentional ways in which they celebrated the significance of their historic home.

Maddie Webster is a PhD student in the American & New England Studies Program at Boston University. She holds a BA in History from Boston College, where she studied twentieth-century presidential history while concurrently exploring her fledgling interest in Boston history and culture. she has since researched an array of sites including the structures of Franklin Park, the 1916 former public convenience on Boston Common, a flock of pigeons at Park Street, the Gettysburg Cyclorama in the South End, a bronze trash art installation underneath the Haymarket, and, most recently, the 1846 Warren House.

This talk is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Image courtesy of Digital Commonwealth.

  • Gallery Reception - Kevin Gillespie: Local Scenes

    January 10, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library

The Friends of the Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library in partnership with Uforge are pleased to announce a new exhibition as part of their rotating art program. After soliciting proposals from a range of local artists, a selection committee comprised of community members and BPL staff has chosen six exceptional artists to fill its gallery space over the course of 2019. The first exhibition of the year will highlight the watercolor landscapes of local artist Kevin Gillespie.

A resident of Jamaica Plain for over 30 years, Gillespie paints serene, closely studied scenes of his neighborhood’s many natural wonders, including Jamaica Pond and the Arnold Arboretum. His work, often done en plein air, captures the shadows of tree branches, the ripples of water, and the changes of the season observed along the well-trod paths of the region’s parks. The medium of watercolor allows for subtle gradations in color and texture along with small details like fallen leaves and footprints in the snow.

Local Scenes by Kevin Gillespie is on view from January 4 through February 28, 2019, with a public open house to be held by the Friends of the Jamaica Plain Library on Thursday, January 10, 5:30-7:30 PM. The library is open Monday-Wednesday 10-6, Thursday 12-8, and Friday-Saturday 9-5 (closed Sundays). The exhibition space is located on the lower level.

This exhibition is proudly sponsored by The Friends of the Jamaica Plain Branch Library.
