Growler Gala and Auction on Thursday, October 25…

Growler Gala Website Slider

At the Loring Greenough House, 6:30 – 9:30 PM.

Get your Early Bird Tickets today!

JP Centre/South Main Streets will host their Growler Gala and Auction fundraiser for the second year in a row at Loring Greenough House, on Thursday, October 25, 2018, from 6:30 – 9:30 PM. The event will feature music, food, Turtle Swamp Brewery beer, and Bully Boy Distillers cocktails, with our silent and live auctions.

As a tribute to the history of breweries in Jamaica Plain, JP Centre/South Main Streets will be auctioning off 12 growler works of art, decorated by local artists and celebrities. The artist or celebrity decorates a one-gallon amber glass jug, using Jamaica Plain as inspiration. These growlers are then displayed around town and put up for a live auction at the event. Artists include: Amy Joyce, Marnie Jain, Daniela Klaz, Randace Rauscher, The Eliot School, Nika Elugardo, Liz Malia, Annissa Essaibi-George, and more. Last year, bidding on some of the growlers was quite heated! There is also a silent auction, with a dessert class by a local chef, vintage photographs of Jamaica Plain, Red Sox memorabilia, and contributions from many of our local businesses.

Early Bird tickets are $25. Ticket prices go up to $40 on Tuesday, October 23. Each ticket comes with two drinks; extra drink tickets will be available for sale. Proceeds from the fundraiser benefit the programs, events, and services offered by JP Centre/South Main Streets, such as our First Thursdays, Screen on the Green, Community CleanUp, LuMeNet series, and more.

15th Annual JP Canine Costume Parade!

15th Annual Jamaica Plain Dog Parade

Last year’s winner – a greyhound dressed as Bruce Springsteen … because he was born to run!

This year is the 15th year of the Canine Costume Parade, co-sponsored by JP Centre/South Main Streets and the JP Business and Professional Association. All are welcome – dogs and owners are encouraged to dress in costumes and parade down our main thoroughfare. Registration is $10, and all proceeds go to the City of Boston’s Animal Shelter, in the form of gift cards from our local pet stores.

The parade is on Saturday, October 27, 2018. Registration starts at 12noon at the First Baptist Church, 633 Centre Street. The parade will officially begin at 1PM, travel south on Centre Street, and end at the Loring Greenough House. At that time, each of the dogs and owners will parade before judges, and prizes will be awarded to the best costumes!

Food trucks will round out the party at Loring Greenough House. Stay also to meet our Grand Marshall of the parade, Indy, a Canine Companion for Independence, who works along with his human in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office to provide relief for victims and witnesses.

Come one and come all for a tail-waggingly good time!

  • Fog x FLO: Fujiko Nakaya on the Emerald Necklace

    August 11, 2018 - October 31, 2018 @
Emerald Necklace, Boston, MA 02130, USA

The Conservancy welcomes to Boston and Brookline Fujiko Nakaya’s first extended citywide exhibition of multiple “fog sculptures,” marking her five decade career with works at five sites along the historic urban parks that link more than a dozen neighborhoods, and provide a natural, recreational and cultural conduit for the community. Created in response to the landmarked waterways and landscapes designed by Frederick Law Olmsted (FLO), Nakaya’s “climate responsive” shape-shifting, pure water forms invite visitors to immerse themselves in the art, experience nature anew, and appreciate the vital role of the Emerald Necklace in our city’s history, present, and future.

Organized by the Conservancy with curator Jen Mergel, this FREE public art presentation is on view every day, hourly from dawn to dusk, from August 11 through October 31 at these locations.

Nakaya calls fog “the most generous medium” and has collaborated for decades with artists, musicians, designers and more to transform her fog sculptures to “fog performances.”

  • Kristen Gossler: Confluence at the Jamaica Plain Branch Library

    September 7, 2018 - October 31, 2018 @
Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library, 30 South St, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130, USA

The Friends of the Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library in partnership with Uforge are pleased to announce a new exhibition as part of their rotating art program. During the months of September and October, a series of abstract ink paintings by Providence-based artist Kristen Gossler will be exhibited.

A graduate of RISD, Kristen Gossler creates complex layered works built up from a variety of materials, including water-based pigment, screen printing ink, sumi ink, and acrylic paint. Each of her expressive abstract paintings poses a question, seeking to engage the viewer in an interactive experience. She pulls from a mental inventory of repeated forms found in both the natural and manmade worlds, provoking a familiarity and comfort in the viewer through subliminal means, as well as encouraging personal connection with the work. Of her use of the forms, Gossler says: “The unconscious use of these symbols is not art – it is the cognitive filter of the artist that gives these paintings relevance and meaning as a body of work.” Her recent “Confluence” series deals in earthy browns, warm yellows, soft greens, and burnt oranges, centering bold shapes and natural textures.

Kristen Gossler: Confluence is on view from September 7 through October 31, 2018, with a public reception to be held on Thursday, September 13, 5:30-7:30 PM. The library is open Monday-Wednesday 10-6, Thursday 12-8, and Friday-Saturday 9-5 (closed Sundays). The exhibition space is located on the lower level.

This exhibition is proudly sponsored by The Friends of the Jamaica Plain Branch Library.

    About May-Lan Tan:

May-Lan Tan studied fine art at Goldsmiths and works as a ghostwriter. Her stories have appeared in Zoetrope: All-Story, the Atlas Review, the Reader, and Areté. She lives in Berlin.

Praise for "Things to Make and Break":
“There’s plenty of darkness and a sprinkling of magic, and these strange, flinty, cigarette-stained narratives speed by, offering lots of surface tension and compelling deeper passions.” —The Guardian

    About Elizabeth Mikesch:

Elizabeth Mikesch is the author of NICETIES: AURAL ARDOR, PARDON ME (Calamari Press, 2014), and has appeared in Sleepingfish, Unsaid, The Collagist, Caketrain, and Similar Peaks.

Praise for "Niceties: Aural Ardor, Pardon Me":
"If you're weary of mild, obedient prose, try plunging into the pages of Elizabeth Mikesch's exuberant debut. This book is witchcraft: stories refreshingly loosely translated from the real by a mind that moves on its own."—Noy Holland

    Papercuts J.P.

    DATE: Thursday, OCTOBER 18
    TIME: 7:00PM
LOCATION: Papercuts J.P. - 5 Green Street, Boston MA 02130

Join us for a reading and conversation with Micah Perks, author of “True Love and Other Dreams of Miraculous Escape” and Elizabeth Graver, author of “The End of the Point”.

Praise for "The End of the Point”

“With her fourth and most emotionally textured novel, Graver proves herself a master chronicler of the ever-spiraling human comedy. The End of the Point is a work of uncommon gracefulness, as much in its boundless empathy as in the luminosity of its prose.”–Jan Stuart, The Boston Globe

“Eloquent . . . Graver’s engaging, expansive storytelling allows us to take up residence inside the mind of a host of different characters, watching as they create their own pictures of the world around them, as they invest certain places and people with mythical significance.” –Alida Becker, The New York Times

    Praise for “True Love”

"A writer whose stories are endearingly hard headed and tender hearted, and whose characters are so very alive that they practically escape off the page when you encounter them. This collection will cure what ails you.” Kelly Link

“What an enticing cast of characters readers get to meet here! Micah Perks writes so well of love in many of its forms and stages, and she populates her book with such a memorable crew. No one is exempt from struggle and disappointment, and yet there is always a chance for transcendence, too." Aimee Bender

    Oct. 23, 2018, 7-9:30 p.m.

A Loring Greenough House “Tuesdays in the Parlor” presentation

Bike riding is especially popular today, not only as recreation and sport but also as a serious mode of commuting around town. Also the convention is that you just join the line and whomever is opposite you is your partner. You may ask a specific partner to dance if you like.

    Papercuts J.P.

Papercuts J.P. is pleased to host "A Reading with Iain Haley Pollock". Join us for an engaging evening as Iain Haley Pollock discusses his new poetry collection, "Ghost, Like a Place" (out now, via Alice James Books)

Praise for “Ghost, Like a Place”

The ghosts that haunt Iain Haley Pollock’s poems have substance. Some have names: Tamir. Rex. Emmett. Black boys of Philadelphia. Their voices are 'the chattering of crows in a distant sycamore.' There is awe in these voices, and self-deprecation, and lament. Most―despite the fact that there is little comfort to offer here―there is a faith in the body, in humanity, to bear its burdens. Read Ghost, like a Place, and 'know, finally, the rapture and wildness of belief.'" ―Meg Kearney, author of Home by Now

  • Tres Gatos Book Club: Less

    November 4, 2018 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
    Tres Gatos

On November 4th, join us as we discuss, debate, drink around and dig into a new classic, Andrew Sean Greer's LESS, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and massive bestseller! The book is on sale at the Tres Gatos Bookstore and all are welcome!

"Who says you can't run away from your problems? You are a failed novelist about to turn fifty. A wedding invitation arrives in the mail: your boyfriend of the past nine years is engaged to someone else. You can't say yes--it would be too awkward--and you can't say no--it would look like defeat. On your desk are a series of invitations to half-baked literary events around the world.

QUESTION: How do you arrange to skip town?

    ANSWER: You accept them all.

What would possibly go wrong? Arthur Less will almost fall in love in Paris, almost fall to his death in Berlin, barely escape to a Moroccan ski chalet from a Saharan sandstorm, accidentally book himself as the (only) writer-in-residence at a Christian Retreat Center in Southern India, and encounter, on a desert island in the Arabian Sea, the last person on Earth he wants to face. Somewhere in there: he will turn fifty. Through it all, there is his first love. And there is his last.

Because, despite all these mishaps, missteps, misunderstandings and mistakes, Less is, above all, a love story.

A scintillating satire of the American abroad, a rumination on time and the human heart, a bittersweet romance of chances lost, by an author The New York Times has hailed as "inspired, lyrical," "elegiac," "ingenious," as well as "too sappy by half," Less shows a writer at the peak of his talents raising the curtain on our shared human comedy."

    SEE YOU ON NOV. 4TH!

Natraj seamlessly melds the classical music of India, traditional music from West Africa, and contemporary jazz to create its own unique and infectious style. Hard-driving African grooves and graceful Indian ragas meet in the band’s expansive jazz conception. Appearances include India’s JazzYatra and Prayojana International Music Festival; Ghana’s PANAFEST; the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto; the Guelph Jazz Festival, Guelph, Canada. Natraj has performed with icons of Indian classical music including Kadri Gopalnath, Chitravina Ravikiran, Shashank, Ronu Majumdar, and Trichy Sankaran, as well as younger masters like Aditya Kalyanpur and Prasanna.

Natraj has released four CDs to acclaim in the international press and airplay worldwide.
