  • JPOS 2019 Registration!

    May 22, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Jamaica Plain Arts Council- JP Open Studios

    Save the Date:
    JP Open Studios 2019
    Registration Begins
    May 22, 2019, 7 pm

    In-person registration will open on
Wednesday, May 22, from 7 pm - 9 pm at
The Footlight Club, 7a Eliot Street,
    Jamaica Plain, MA 02130

    Registration Information and Process:
Individual studio, shared studio, or private shared site artists may register beginning on May 22nd in-person or by mail. Form included at the end of this email.

Group Site: In-person group site registration process: (PLEASE NOTE: There is no reason to arrive early!)

In person group site registration is no longer a first come, first served process. From 7 pm - 7:30 pm, Wednesday, May 22nd, all artists who are in attendance will pull a random number out of a hat. This will determine your place in line for choosing your showing location. Artists arriving after 7:30 pm will also pull random numbers, but will select a site location in a second round of registration following completion of round 1 artists. Again, there is no benefit in arriving before 6:45 pm as random numbers will be pulled beginning at 7 pm! Early arrival will in no way affect your order of group site selection. Site selection will take place by random numbers pulled from a hat.

When registering for a group site, please be prepared to select your ideal location and provide your registration payment (payment can be made by cash, check, or credit card).
If you are unable to attend in-person, you may send a proxy to select your space or you may mail your registration to JPOS, P.O. Box 300222, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130. ALL registrations that are mailed in will be recorded after the May 22nd in-person site selection is completed.

In person registrants can register themselves and one other artist only. Proxy's will be required to pull a second number to represent absentee artist. Proxy can only select one location per number drawn. They will need to get back in line according to the random number selection to complete the second registration.

Options for Showing Art During JPOS:
Individual Studio, Shared Studios, Private Shared Site and Local Businesses

Artist showing in private spaces are required to register.
If the business location you are showing at is also a JPOS sponsor, you still need to register. Sponsorship does not cover an artist's registration. If you do not register you will not be listed on the map.

Please contact us if you are looking to either open up your space to a fellow artist or are an artist looking for available space. While we can not guarantee placement in a private studio space, we are happy to help connect you with any spaces that we may know about.

JPOS Group Site 2019 available locations are:
First UU Church - inside and outside
    Loring Greenough House - outside
    First Baptist Church - outside
    The Brewery - outside

  • George Lakey: How We Win

    May 30, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
First Church in Jamaica Plain Unitarian Universalist

George Lakey has been active in direct action campaigns for six decades. Recently retired from Swarthmore College, where he was the Eugene M. Lang Visiting Professor for Issues in Social Change, Lakey's first arrest was at a civil rights demonstration in March 1963, and his most recent was March 29, 2018 in the Power Local Green Jobs Campaign.

Some high points of his movement experience were sailing into Vietnam with medical supplies in defiance of the U.S. war, participating in the first mass sit-down at the Supreme Court as part of his LGBT activism, founding the collective Men Against Patriarchy and the Movement for a New Society, and coordinating a statewide cross-class, cross-race coalition against the Reagan counter-revolution. He led over 1500 training workshops on five continents and co-founded Training for Change.

HOW WE WIN is his tenth book; his ninth was VIKING ECONOMICS: How the Scandinavians got it right and how we can, too.

George Lakey’s Manual for Direct Action was literally a life-saver for many during the height of the struggle for Black freedom and dignity in the 1960s. How We Win has arrived to us at another key moment in our human journey. . -- Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King, CEO of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change

Lakey shows us how nonviolent tactics and brilliant organizing win enduring changes. -- Rebecca Solnit, Harper’sContributing Editor, National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism, author of Hope in the Dark.

If you want to be a soldier, you can go to West Point. If you want to be a nonviolent change-maker--well, this is an awfully good place to start. George Lakey has been near the center of American resistance for decades, and so he has both remarkable stories and remarkable insights--not to mention some remarkable colleagues who add their perspective to this necessary manual! -- Bill McKibben, co-founder 350.org

  • Party, Promenade, and Play: A Wilde Affair

    June 1, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 10:30 pm
    Loring-Greenough House

The Footlight Club and the Loring-Greenough House invite you to "A Wilde Affair" in JP! Please join us at an elegant garden party at the Loring-Greenough House, followed by the opening night performance of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest at the Footlight Club! Enjoy delicious hors d'oeurves and desserts, along with some festive, bubbly spirits, outdoors in the garden of the historic Loring-Greenough House built in 1760 before strolling across the street to historic Eliot Hall, home of the Footlight Club for opening night of the final show of their 142nd season. Reception starts at 6pm, and you are invited to come in Victorian garb, with the stroll to the theatre taking place at 7:30pm. Plenty of time to pick up your ticket and find your seat for the 8pm performance!

Written in 1894 and first produced in 1895, The Importance of Being Earnest is a farcical comedy set in late Victorian era London, in which the leading characters maintain fictitious personae to escape burdensome social obligations. In the hands of talented director David Marino, and a cast of vets and newcomers to the Club, the lush, clever dialog crackles with wit and charm.

The Loring-Greenough House was constructed in 1760 by Commodore Loring and owned by the Greenough family from 1783 until 1924. The Jamaica Plain Tuesday Club purchased the house in 1924 and has been steward ever since then. In 2008, the club articulated a vibrant new community-oriented role for the House as a center for social, cultural, historical, and educational activities.

Situated directly across the street by the monument, Eliot Hall is home to the Footlight Club, America’s oldest continuously-operating community theater. Originally built in 1832 in Greek Revival/Italianate style, the hall was slated for demolition by the time the club's members purchased it in 1889. Since then it has served for over a century as the organization's home and performance venue. The Trustees of Eliot Hall were formed by the group in the 1980s to oversee renovations to the deteriorating building, saving it from closure, and in 1988 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Tickets for this very special event are just $40/$20 for members, which includes the reception with hors d’oeurves, desserts, and drinks, and a ticket to the show. You can purchase tickets now at http://www.footlight.org/shop-box-office/earnest-060119.

    See http://www.lcfd.org/bgfe for more info
We dance Gender Free. In simple terms that means we don't use gender terminology but use the method developed at Heather and Rose in Oregon called Global terminology - examples are 1st diagonals, or the Window Side to identify the who in each call. Also the convention is that you just join the line and whomever is opposite you is your partner. You may ask a specific partner to dance if you like.
Suggested donation of $7 when you come to dance.
