  • Sunday Afternoon Concert - Foggy Mountain Consort

    March 24, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
    Loring Greenough House

Please join us in our historic parlor for our Sunday Afternoon Concert Series which recreates the atmosphere of “musical afternoons” popular in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Foggy Mountain Consort is a stringed instrument quintet of eclectic intent and deep resources. With members hailing from the rarefied early music world of Renaissance dances, stunning songs, and lutes of outlandish size – to the bluegrass stomping grounds where flashy fiddle tunes mingle with heartbreaking ballads, the Foggies intrepidly venture into a territory of mutual musical discovery. Peter Lehman on theorbo and Doug Freundlich on violone, complement Lauck Benson on both fretted and fretless banjo and Art Schatz on fiddle, with Anne Goodwin graciously providing vocals and rhythm guitar. The result is the Boston area's foremost R&B ensemble, that's Renaissance & Bluegrass.

The concert includes instrumental pieces, bluegrass tunes, and Renaissance compositions, with songs ranging from 17th century Blame Not My Lute to American folk ballads.
    The band website is http://www.foggymtnconsort.lehmandesign.org

2pm - Performance with Tea Service to follow (included with admission)

Tickets are available at the door: $15 ($10 seniors, students and JPTC members).

  • The Boston Suffragists

    March 30, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library

Women – and men – from Boston were very active in the movement to gain the vote for women. Lucy Stone, Julia Ward Howe, Clara Barton and others gave speeches, wrote articles, and marched in parades during the almost seventy year struggle.

Come and listen to present day Bostonians as they read from these writings and speeches that reveal women’s determination to be able to vote in order to participate fully in the political life of the country.

Judith Kalaora, from History at Play, will be a part of the program. Ms. Kalaora portrays a number of famous women through living history performances, including Deborah Sampson, Christa McAuliffe, and Hedy Lamarr. We are very pleased to have her join us in the role of Lucy Stone, one of the most important figures in the woman suffrage movement.

This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Co-sponsored by the Boston Women’s Heritage Trail and the JPHS.

  • Sarah's Long Walk

    March 30, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library

Since its founding, Boston has had a strong focus on Public Education, but not everyone had access to the same education. A young girl, Sarah Roberts, forced Bostonians to acknowledge this inequality when her father sued the City of Boston because of the evident inequity in the Public Education System. In the 1960's and 70's, Bostonians were forced to revisit those ideas of inequality when Boston busing began. Today BPS is working to close achievement and opportunity gaps, as we move into a new century of education and progress. This program invites members of the community to discuss how women, like Sarah, inspire them to provide an immeasurable service for all of our children across the Commonwealth. This program is part of the National Parks of Boston Outreach presentations. To learn more, visit https://www.nps.gov/bost/index.htm

  • Cabaret at The Footlight Club

    March 30, 2019 @ 8:00 pm - April 13, 2019 @ 8:00 pm
    The Footlight Club

Cabaret takes place from 1929-1930, a time when Berlin, in the midst of a post-World War I economic depression, is transitioning from a center of underground, avant-garde cultural epicenter to the beginnings of Hitler’s totalitarian regime and the rise of the Nazi Party. Into this world enters Clifford Bradshaw, a struggling American writer looking for inspiration for his next novel. On his first night in Berlin, Cliff wanders into the Kit Kat Klub, a seedy nightclub overseen by the strange, omniscient and gender-bending Master of Ceremonies, “the Emcee.” Here, Cliff meets Sally Bowles, a vivacious, talented cabaret performer, and an utterly lost soul.

With a distinctly Brechtian dose of provocation and a score featuring songs that have become classics of the American Musical Theater, Cabaret is a fierce, meaty musical that pushes the boundaries of the form and literally holds “the mirror up to nature.”

Cabaret is the Footlight Club's annual fundraiser. Tickets are available now, $28.00, $25.00 for seniors, students and children.

  • Venetian Baroque: Celebrating Barbara Strozzi”

    April 4, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library

La Donna Musicale presents “Venetian Baroque: Celebrating Barbara Strozzi”

Born four centuries ago, the composer Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677) was at the heart of the unique and thriving musical culture of Venice. Taught by Francesco Cavalli, the city's most prominent composer, she and Antonia Bembo (ca. 1640-1720) found distinctive ways to sing and to create extraordinarily passionate music. The program includes captivating songs and powerful laments by Barbara Strozzi from several of her eight published books, as well as arias from Antonia Bembo’s book Produzione armoniche and from Francesco Cavalli’s L’Artemisia.

Combining stirring performances with groundbreaking scholarship, this award-winning ensemble, led by 2009 Radcliffe Institute Fellow and Brandeis University Resident Scholar Laury Gutiérrez, brings to life music by female composers nearly forgotten by history, vibrant works that have either been long overlooked or only recently discovered - passionate arias, moving laments, and delightful instrumental music.

For more information, see La Donna Musicale www.ladm.org. This performance is being funded by the Friends of the Jamaica Plain Branch Library.

  • It's Time to Change the State's Racist Flag & Seal!

    April 4, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
First Church in Jamaica Plain Unitarian Universalist

Join us at the Jamaica Plain Forum to discuss how to Help Change the State of Massachusetts official Flag and Seal - a Symbol of White Supremacy for the last 390 years.

For the past 35 years, legislation has been pending in the Massachusetts State Legislature to establish a special commission to review the State Flag and Seal, and to invite Native leaders of the Commonwealth to sit at the decision-making table with legislators to design a new flag and seal for Massachusetts.
The current flag and seal, which features a Colonial broadsword held in a white hand over the head of a composite "Ideal Native American," is one of two state flags in the United States that remains controversial due to its representation of white supremacy. Mississippi continues to use the Confederate Stars and Bars - a representation of white domination over African Americans - in its official state symbols. Does Massachusetts want to continue in a race to the bottom with Mississippi to see which state will retain their invidious imagery of white supremacy the longest? As the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim landing approaching in 2020, and with other bills pending in the Massachusetts legislature to ban the use of Native sports mascots in public schools, to change the name of Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day, and to institute a positive program of Native studies in public schools in the Commonwealth, to counteract centuries of negative stereotyping of Native People - the time is right to change the State Flag and Seal of Massachusetts. With your help, we can do it!

Come hear: Elizabeth Solomon, Massachusett Tribe at Ponkapoag, Representative Nika Elugardo, D - 15th Suffolk/Norfolk District Communities of Mission Hill, JP, Roslindale & Brookline. Eva Blake, Assonet Wampanoag, Senior Director of Foundation Relations at YouthBuild, and David Detmold of the Campaign to Change the Mass Flag and Seal.

  • Gallery Reception: Stacy Friedman: Repeated Remembrance

    April 6, 2019 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library

The Friends of the Jamaica Plain Branch of the Boston Public Library in partnership with Uforge are pleased to announce a new exhibition as part of their rotating art program. After soliciting proposals from a range of local artists, a selection committee comprised of community members and BPL staff has chosen six exceptional artists to fill its gallery space over the course of 2019. The next exhibition features the work of Jamaica Plain-based printmaker and educator Stacy Friedman.

A graduate of Mass Art, Friedman merges a variety of printmaking techniques for a layered, textured style that incorporates photographs and family history to explore lineage, memory, and identity. Rendered in antique browns and faded greys, her silhouetted figures are both anonymous and familiar. They blend and fade into one another, hinting at complex relationships and curious connections. Speaking about her medium, Friedman says, “Printmaking’s inherent capability to preserve traces of previous images, and the ability to print ghosts of a matrix, make it an ideal medium to explore both the parallel and interwoven realms of past and present.”

Stacy Friedman: Repeated Remembrance is on view from March 8 through April 30, 2019, with a public open house to be held by the Friends of the Jamaica Plain Library on Saturday, April 6, 2:30-4:30 PM. The library is open Monday-Wednesday 10-6, Thursday 12-8, and Friday-Saturday 9-5 (closed Sundays). The exhibition space is located on the lower level.
