On Saturday, May 22, 2021, JP Centre/South Main Streets took a few moments at the Green Street Parklet to recognize last year’s Volunteer and Business of the Year. A proper ceremony for this deserved recognition was finally possible as Boston’s vaccination rates increase. It also provided a much needed respite and recovery from these worrisome months. Volunteer Patti McKenna and On Centre’s owner Phil Celeste received awards for JP Centre/South Main Streets Volunteer of the Year and Business of the Year for 2020.
Board member Brad Brown took a few moments to speak about Patti and Phil, emphasizing the success of their work, and their continued dedication and perseverance during the pandemic. Brad presented certificates that were signed by the Boston City Council, in recognition of their outstanding work on the Galentine’s Wine & Chocolate Tour in February 2020.
Patti McKenna is a long-time volunteer for JP Centre/South Main Streets, having formerly served as a board member. The Wine & Chocolate tour was actually her suggestion. Patti partnered with Phil Celeste, owner of On Centre, a specialty retail shop located at 676 Centre Street in Jamaica Plain, to plan the route and coordinate with other business owners. The sold-out event created a flurry of pedestrian traffic on a cold, winter night and good boost in sales for participating shops.
