New Parklet on Green Street

Since February 2019, JP Centre/South Main Streets has been working to install a “parklet” near the intersection of Green and Centre Street. Our hope was that the parklet would activate a less-travelled corridor and promote pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

At last the parklet has arrived! It technically functions as a public park, so it is free and open to the public for use. It will remain in its location until the cold, at which point the city will pack and store the modular parklet. In the Spring, the parklet is reinstalled in the same location. The parklet is the result of work that began in early 2019 as part of the Tactical Realms initiative with Boston Transportation Department.

The parklet is a partnership of JP Centre/South Main Streets, A Better City, and the City of Boston, and sponsored by a Barr Foundation grant. The design was created by Merritt Chase – Landscape Architecture / Urban Design. Many thanks to our Volunteer of the Year, Patti McKenna for her donation of pumpkins and flowers to decorate!

The parklet features chairs, tables, bench, and niches for plants and décor. JP Centre/South Main Streets will offer programming for the parklet to encourage pedestrian traffic along the Green Street corridor. The Blue Frog Bakery has partnered with JP Centre/South Main Streets to help maintain the space on a daily basis.
